anyone ever use systemic for orchids like phals, dendrobians, and Cattleyas

    I am currently using a bonide systemic on my bonsai's and would like to know if anyone has tried this on orchids. I am being overrun with spider mites and it is driving me nuts!!! I am a little reluctant to experiment with bonide on my orchids so wanted to know if anyone has used this or any other systemic on their orchids?

    I use two miticides in rotation. The are Avid (generic is Abemectin) and Forbid. There are others, but I use these because besides most mites, the also are effective against false spider mites. Both are translaminar so you don't have to have a direct hit, it will travel through the leaf. I have used it on many genera without a problem.

    If I’m not mistaken, the Bonide product is an insecticide, so will not kill mites.

    In addition to the products Marni mentioned, you might look into Azamax and the more easily obtained Bio Advanced 3-in-1 Insect, Disease, & Mite Control.

    In addition to choosing an appropriate treatment, how you use it is also important. My approach is to spray all plant surfaces to dripping and drench the potting medium, doing three, thorough treatments at one-week intervals.

    Most pesticides only kill adults, leaving eggs and juveniles the ability to mature and reproduce. By doing three consecutive treatments, the odds of killing a newly-matured pest before it can reproduce goes up immensely.

    Be careful in creating pesticide resistance in your mite control. Their generational cycle is short and repeated applications is a quick method to breed resistance.

    Using above method with a miticide like abamectin needs to go along with cultural changes. Mites breed quickly in hot dry conditions. Inhibit that.
