I placed and paid for an order in April. It took Amos Tan over 7 weeks to ship the plants after I paid for them. It took the plants almost 2 weeks to arrive because he ignored my shipping instructions. 1 of the plants I purchased was destroyed by the USDA because it was infested with insect eggs. Of the 44 plants I paid for, I only received 33. Amos refuses to refund for certain plants that he claims to have shipped but were not included on the phyto declaration. Additionally, he refuses to refund the money for the destroyed bulbo virescens. I've spent 3 weeks trying to resolve the issues I have with Amos, but he is unresponsive. Of the plants I received, probably 90% will survive. However, I would not order from him again. His prices are high for what he ships, and the customer service is non-existent. Amos still owes me over $200, but I do not expect to ever see the money again. Guess I learned my lesson.

If you couldn't tell, I would recommend AGAINST giving this guy your money.

Jon, that really sucks, I was recently looking at that site for a possible purchase, so thanks for the warning.

    My perspective

All plants was inspected to be free from pest and was confimed to be included within the parcel.
All plants that were undelivered was due to the unavailability at the point in time and a full refund was returned to Jon.

Jon claims that Bulb. virescens was destroyed by USDA and he has proven that by sending me a picture of a message written by USDA. He was refunded the full value.
Jon was requested to provide evidence for the missing plants but he was unable to proof that 11 plants that he claims was missing from within the parcel.

Jon decided to go through with Paypal's claim that ended up taking 3 weeks to resolve the issue.

Here are the messages written by Jon....

Jon: Hi Amos, I received the refund. It doesn't appear to include the virescens refund. Can you send that along also, please. Thanks.

Jon: I received the plants, and I'm happy with the ones I received. Two plants on the phytosanitary declaration did not arrive. Bulbophyllum cruentum was not in the box, and it was not listed on the sheet as having been removed by the USDA. I am very happy with the plants, and I would consider placing another order with you in the future. I understand the issues that arose during the order, and I think there is a communication gap. I will send you a link to a commentary I will post of the transaction. I am sorry we had the issues we did with the order. I was nervous as this was the first time I've imported plants, and I have a very limited budget. I will go to Paypal now and ask for the refund. If you disagree with the amount, I will provide documentation to all parties involved.

Jon: Hello Amos, My apologies. I didn't mark cruentum on my sheet as having been received. I did receive a seedling of it.

    Hi All

I'm sorry for the bad experiences by many of you from a vendor in my country. I have to admit that this vendor also does not have a very good reputation amongst growers and other vendors here too and many have shunned purchasing anything from him. I would advise would be buyers to consider other sources in Singapore to purchase from instead.

Hi all, This fellow is offering a phal. gigantea at auction on the Orchid Mall for a very steep price. No photos offered. Thought you might want to know.

I would just like to add that most everything that is offered by this site is available in the US. I have received plants second hand from this source and they always appeared to be wild collected. I'm not sure they offer CITES and Phyto Permits but I do know that I have heard of many shipments being confiscated. So, save your money and shop locally if possible.

    Hi All

I would like to emphasize again to not purchase anything from this vendor at all. He has been known to hire local guides around asia to bring him into the jungle to collect plants. He has been caught a few times by customs and the plants confiscated. He has been fined and all but still it has not deterred him at all. So a warning should you still want to purchase from him.

According to the vandas photos, the least I can say is that the plants do not look great...

This said, most of the bulbophyllums are just freshly collected from the jungle, sometimes stored a couple of months, the only difference between a "good" and a "bad" vendor is that the good one will choose the cleanest plants. Bulbo reticulatum, mandibulare, echinolabium, sulawesii, or the rare species are all wild collected, never seed grown...

I have done several imports from Asia, from different vendors, different countries. I have decided not to do it again. In my opinion there are very few grown plants at all. All plants received have been wild collected. One shipment I'm surprised Swedish custom did not confiscate, but since all papers were ok, they can't do a thing.

There are several very good vendors here that do ship overseas with proper papers and all. Some of them even grow them from seed too which I think is cool since you know what to expect. As for Bulbos, as mentioned, most of what you see are wild collected. However for the rest of the species, many do offer seed grown plants for sale. Just shop around alittle or ask around for reliable places.

    Cheers
    Sean

That's funny. I guess Amos Tan couldn't afford to pay. Likely because of his shenanigans.

I was sorta sad to read this thread. He and I used to be trade buddies back in 2007. He eventually stopped answering my emails. Not sure why. We had no bad trades or anything (save for the first one). I have a feeling he's in over his head. He's got a ton of rare stuff that lots of people want and he probably is doing it alone.

He may have been in transition since it looks like he has made some updates.
