I'm hoping to start a small freelance business soon so I'll need something dedicated to work only.

I don't really care about all the bells and whistles (camera, music, video etc)on these things - I just want phone, reliable email which will handle Word, Excel and PDF documents), a decent screen and reasonable battery life.

I'm leaning toward a Blackberry but as I've never used either (and I'm not very technically minded) thought I'd get some opinions on these, or any others that are out there

Blackberry. My iPhone is a wonderful toy, but I'd shoot myself if I had to use it for real life.

As much as I hate to endorse anything MS, I'm afraid I have to agree with Forrest.

All the guys at our company have Blackberry and they seem to be happy with them.

Not me of course....I don't need one as they are too complicated for my brain. Heck it took me forever to figure out the texting thing.

I have a nokia 'blue' phone. It's OK for text messages but you can't send or reply to e-mails. I tried paying some extra $ for 'enhanced mode' but it still was no-go. I didn't go for the 'deluxe mode' for economic reasons. My brother has the G1 and he says they're tricky to work with if you have multiple e-mail accounts. He recommended against using either ( and including the blackberry ) for email, except as an on-the-go travel option.
He's pretty tech-savvy. You might try getting a netbook; however he recommended going somewhere to try them out. He said you'ld really appreciate having a larger screen and full-sized keyboard if you're going to format a lot of documents. You might be able to find a notebook for not much more dough than a netbook; but with a nice-sized screen and comfortable-to-use keyboard.

As for the phone; I think Clearwire offers phone along with their internet network connection.

Thank you all. I have a laptop which is what I will normally work on, but will be on the move more than is ideal in the coming months, and it won't always be convenient to carry it with me.

I have a Blackberry and the rest of my family has i-phones so I've had a lot of time to mess with both. While there are lots of differenced between the two, the real fundamental difference for me that the i-phone has a touch screen and the Blackberry does not (unless you get the Blackberry Storm, which I don't recommend - still a work in progress). My history includes a long list of touch screen devices and I still miss that feature (a lot), however I hate the i-phone's touch screen keypad and the Blackberry's keypad, by contrast, is awesome, if a bit small. The i-phone's a cool device ... no doubt about it ... but at the end of the day if I could only choose one it would be the BB. I use it with a handful of different email accounts constantly - I probably send 15 or 20 emails with it in an average day - and I sync it with outlook on the company server and at home. Awesome, I say ...

I love my Blackberry - tis the Bold .... had it only since Feb this year so still getting used to everything it does .... I love love love it ... adore the keyboard - the clarity and resolution of the screen when watching video's/movies is absolutely amazing, its easy to use, easy to download additional programs onto it (I use a different calender/PIM program than the usual Blackberry one and it took only a few minutes to sort out) ... actually changing from my HP IPAQ to the Bold was so simple as well - their computer software allows you to basically take the info off another device and upload it onto the Blackberry .....

I use windows on my laptop and have had no issues synching it together.....

I did look at an iphone - in fact I also looked at the Blackberry Storm which is also an iphone kinda thing with the screen interface ... but from everything I read I wanted to give it another 6-9 mths before I went down the path of an iphone (or similar) just to work some more bugs out .... and I'm really glad I went with the Bold .....

I am also a Nokia girl - always had them and always really liked using them ... but I am a Blackberry convert now I must say

Had an iPhone since it first came out. Haven't experienced any problems and I love it. I have multiple email accounts which I manage every day on the iPhone and I send over 15 emails a day, I hold online office hours for my students via AIM on my phone when I'm not in front of the computer. I don't have to sync my email, it does it all by itself.

Most people prefer the product that they started with. If you had a Blackberry first, then you can't see yourself without it. If you started with an iPhone, then you don't understand why anyone would use a Blackberry. We tend to prefer things we are comfortable with.
