I bought this phal. 'Golden treasure' when it was budded up with no open flowers from a garden center. Its a very robust and healthy plant but when the flowers began to open I noticed they were a bit odd...only four petals instead of the five that form the typical moth orchid. Any one ever seen this or know what could have caused it? IMG_20150222_114108017.jpg

Probably either the pesticides or antibiotics used in the mass-production ranges where they originate. Next blooming may be normal.

If this problem happens with every flower, and the resulting flowers are all somewhat congruent in their type of deformity. Then I believe that it may be a genetic problem with the plant. If it is genetic, then you can expect that every flower ever produced by the plant will have the deformities.

OK, that is interesting. I still think its pretty nonetheless and suppose it will be a cool oddity in my collection. Thank you for reply!...:)

Very quirky. I bet it's genetic. Plants like these can actually be quite valuable because they are so unique.

I have never seen-, nor heard of any commercial insecticide or disinfectants causing such deformities. About the only treatment I'm aware of that I am certain can cause flower deformation in phalaenopsis is the over-application of the synthetic rooting hormones, naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and/or indole acetic acid (IAA). Fortunately, once the plants are returned to normal culture without OD-ing them on the stuff, the deformities go away for subsequent blooming.

It's probably genetic, but as it is not a form of peloria (or pelorism), it does not enhance the value.
