Thanks Naoki...I've been looking for a couple of those species. Have you ordered before?

Chuck, I have gotten Malala plants from Botanica, but this is the first time they are getting plants from the new source. I'm guessing that it is the same source as LOC, and LOC's plants were in amazingly good conditions (for fresh import). The import route (e.g. broker, entry port etc) may be slightly different, but I'm guessing that they will be probably pretty good (so I did place a small order to Botanica). I think LOC has quite a few of them acclimating from the last import (arrived early March), and they will be available soon (early summer).

Naoki, LOC's website says that they will be taking orders for another shipment in late spring. Have you heard any word about the timeline for this or the plant list? I'm thinking about placing a small order and am wondering if I should hold off for the LOC list or not.

I imagine these are very young?

How different are Madagascar sourced plants? I get bringing new blood in and local variations but I want to understand the excitement.

Yes, there are a couple listed I'm interested in.

I had the same impression that LOC and botanica are buying from the same people.

The plants I got from LOC compared to Malala were in better condition. No carpet padding!

Normally, both seemed to do the import to coincide with the Redlands show, which would be spring. If there's something you'd like, and you can afford it, I recommend buying it.

Adam, when I communicated with John 3 weeks ago, he was thinking of opening the preorder around redland (late May), and place the order after 1 mo. But I'm not sure if they decided to do. If you email John, he will let you know.

Ree, I'm guessing hard-core Ang people get excited because lots of the species are not normally available. Even thought the condition is pretty good as Daniel mentioned, they definitely take longer to acclimate and I'm guessing that they have higher chances of loss than domestic sources.

I have gotten madagascar import from LOC twice, and they looked like this (I'm not sure if it is typical or no). This is from March 2017 import, but they kindly took care of them for a couple weeks because the winter here was unusually cold. Roots of most were already starting to resume growth.

    Hi Naoki,
I just looked at the LOC website and they have the same plants and prices downloaded right into their shopping cart for Madagascar preorder. I've never ordered from either business, but it would sound like you've had good luck with both?

LOC is currently taking orders for their next import from Madagascar, and the order period is until the end of May. John said plants will arrive sometime around July. They also sell acclimated plants from previous imports through their eBay store (laorchidjohn), and Tin has been working hard to reproduce these species in flask from pods that their "hold back" plants produce. Many are available as seedlings from them or will be in the near future.

I've gotten plants from both over the years but haven't ordered from Botanica in quite some time. Brenda has always been very pleasant to deal with and the plants were high quality. I do not expect that this has changed. John and Tin are a 15 minute drive from my house, so I've gotten a number of plants from them over the years and have been to their greenhouses multiple times. They are both great to deal with, and their plants are high quality. I've mentioned this before, but I've seen these imports shortly after they arrive at LOC. The plants that are in "poor condition" compared to others in the box still look better than the "good condition" plants that used to come in from Madagascar.

LOC has been dealing with this nursery for several years and works very hard to be sure the plants arrive in good shape. I still have some losses, but have been very pleased and have ordered from them each time they have offered the opportunity. The list and pricing have been substantially the same with a few different/new things added each time.

The lists of Botanica and LOC are the same I meant. So, choose your preferred person to give business to?

Sadly Michelle of Malala orchidées died a little over a year ago on April 06, 2016. She was run over by a motorcycle. She died a few months after her husband Raoul had passed away. She was still very much in grief from this loss and from the conversations we had over the phone, I cannot help thinking that she wanted very much to be reunited with him.
I am happy if you have found a new source for the import of plants.

Yes, Gilles told us about the incident, and it is very sad. And, another sad new, Holger Perner of Hengduan Mountains Biotechnology passed away due to heart attack last week....

Yes...very sad! This Dendrobium wilsonii just bloomed...I got this from the Perners last time they sold in San Francisco. Wonderful people with wonderful plants.
