My first thought is that, since you are in Australia, it might be one of Bill Williams "Wilmar" series of hybrids. The lateral sepals show the influence of lobbii or related species, to me. What are the sizes of the flowers, inflorescence and leaves/pseudobulbs? Does the infloresence show any indication of successive flowering? Of photos I have seen, it most closely resembles Bulb. Wilmar Sheer Magic (digoelense x Wilmar Galaxy Star), but I wouldn't identify it as such. Hopefully one of the Bulbophyllum species enthusiasts will jump in and confirm or deny your plant's species status.

Heres a pic to give you an idea of size (lighter approx 7cm tall) and also a pic of the spike but i believe its a first flowering of a seedling so that may be the only reason its only got 1 flower per spike

It looks like it could be Bulbophyllum Fredensborg Delight (B. cruentum x B. lobbii).

The flower looks similar, but the parents of this cross would have to be the smallest B. lobbii and cruentum in history!

Would it be plausible that a seedling's first blooming (as hornet said he thinks it is) could be on a plant this small even if the parents are large species?

Most likely something like Bulbophyllum Tsiku Pouter - putidum x lobbii, and consider that any of this parent may be its relative, like insteed of putidum , may be as well facinator or ornatissimum, and insteed lobbi, sumatranum or facetum...
