Sunday I went to give the chickens breakfast and found Cajun dead at the entrance to the coop. Saturday he was his normal pain in the ass and Sunday he's dead. We're not sure what happened. There were no signs of any critters getting into the chicken run, and he didn't look beat up. The only thing we can come up with is a snake got him. He was afraid of NOTHING. Poor guy. My hens egg production has continously dropped as the week goes on. I didn't think you needed a rooster for unfertile eggs, but something is up. I'll probably get a new rooster this weekend. Bye buddy

Awww, I'm sorry to hear this, Dew! :( Poor Cajun. I hope you can figure out what happened to him, so it doesn't happen to the next guy.

Do you have a lot of snakes in your yard big enough to have done him in? Poor guy...but he had one heck of a good life with his harem. My 2 girls lay an egg every day and I don't have a rooster. Though, from what I've been told, once the daylight decreases, so does egg production. So, what you're noticing is probably not related to Cajun at all, but is the effects of Fall upon us.

We have rattle snakes and coral snakes here. It doesn't matter how big they are, one bite will do him in. Its the price I pay for living in the Everglades I guess.

heat humidity and decreasing sunlight all can and will cause decreasing egg production .
if he had no swollen parts or bite marks on his face or legs (a snake can't bite thru the feathered areas.)... i would say it was his time, chickens are not known for living a long time ..2 - 3 maybe 4 years max , 2 is more like it. Plus he was not in the best condition to start off with (black marks on comb) i kinda think he was just Old.

have the hens molted yet ? until they do , egg production will drop and then stop until a molt has occured and light times real or artificial increase. They are egg machines but they have a limit. Your climate is a MAJOR stressor on hens.

like Candace said ... him or any rooster being there has no bearing on egg production drops ...if anything him not being there is a good thing for egg production, the hens really do not need a rooster and are probably just fine w/ Mr SEX MACHINE not being there.

Game birds are healthier imho and make better watch birds and harem masters :>)

You can put 300 watt florescent bulbs in the hen house on a timer to increase the daylength to 16 hours and you'll continue to get eggs daily without a rooster. Be sure to increase their calcium and protein intake or you'll get thin shells. Egg production starts to drop after the hens reach about 18 months of age. Most egg production farms butcher the hens at 18 months for stewing.
