Calopogon tuberosus and Pogonia ophioglossoides

Two North American bog species that I have growing in an artificial bog in full sun along with several carnivorous plants as well. Plants originated from flasks that I got from Marni a few years back. The first three photos are of Calopogon and the last two Pogonia.

 

Hi Marni, a friend of mine had some large bales of peat moss laying around that I was able to get and I mixed approximately 50/50 with sand. I then added a layer of live Sphagnum for most of the bog area. I planted some Calopogon in bare spots of peat as I’ve seen in bogs and also some where I put the tuber at the peat level with an inch or two of live Sphagnum on top…both seemed equally vigorous. The Pogonia I planted in the live Sphagnum as it is very stoloniferous, sending its runners through the Sphagnum without really penetrating the peat layer.

I have an overflow that is generally about 2-3 inches below the highest point of the substrate. The Calopogon and Pogonia are probably in some of the lower spots. I think the Calopogon is more adaptable and I think the Pogonia likes it real wet…almost naturally hydroponic.

 

Yes, had leftover rubber pond liner and the depth is probably 2.5-3 feet deep…that includes being raised about a foot which helps with weeding and ensuring excess rain runs out of the bog rather than into it.

 

I have a Calopogon tuberosus Alba in bloom right now in the same artificial bog and it is nearly two months later than the pink forms. Don’t usually see such variation in temperate species where there is a short, defined, growing season?
