    Photography is a very large subject!
    I don't think anyone has mentioned ring flashes.
    I use them a lot, they make an even, shadowless picture , esp. for macro shots,
    and eliminate the need for dark backgrounds.
    If more texture/dimensionality is needed , take the flash off the camera and experiment by tilting to one side( with a white card opposite.)
