20170603_093726.jpg Hello guys, can someone tell me what happened to my cattleya maxima, I bought it about 3 years ago and this is its first flower but it is deformed, I do not use any kind of hormones... maybe not enough fertilizer? I rarely do that 20170603_092810.jpg

Cattleyas do like fertilizer. You might put a slow release fertilizer in the pot. Though I am not aware that a lack of fertilizer would cause a deformity. Insecticide application can also cause deformity. It could be genetic. I would say grow it on and see if it happens on the next blooming. Hopefully, that won't be another 3 years.

Marni, it was my first cattleya and the basket had 3 plants, I decided to separate the plants because the basket was already small for the plants, one of them I put it in a pot with sphagnum moss, the second one in a pot with bark (medium size) and the most neglected plant was mouted. With no experience with cattleya orchids I was keeping the potted plants too wet and they died in less than 2 years but the 3rd one made it back and it has a very nice root system, I grow it outdoors year round and give it water during active growth but rarely fertilizer so I hope it produces better flowers next time and hopefully soon and not in 2020
