    Hi all,
White oak is selling a plant by this name, and I can't find any information on what this is. It looks pretty nice and I think I might want it. Any info would be appreciated.

Calvin, I knew you bought some plants from U.S growers including private collectors. I wonder how you can do that easily? I would love get some plants from a Canadian vendor and a few private collectors, but cost of import is way too much for few plants.

Coel. salverianum is not recognized by Kew but that doesn't mean no such plant. When I first saw the photo and description, Coel. lentiginosa came to my mind...

Thanks Tom, that might just be it.

Canadian import laws have a directive that exempts up to 50 house plants traveling with a traveler across the border from the US. In other words, I can bring them in myself. The directive is a little ambiguous regarding documention, stating that plants 'may' be subject to inspection. Certain states (e.g. California, New York, Oregan) require phytos. At customs, the officer uses the same website I used to find the directive, so usually it's not a problem at all.

Agreed. It looks like C. lentiginosa.

As to the name, there is none such in Coelogyne. A check of IPNI fails to find any "salverianum" in the Orchidaceae, or elsewhere. Sounds like either a gross misinterpretation of a hand scribbled name, a meaningless unpublished varietal name, or complete fiction.

    C. "salverianum" and White Oak Orchids

My inquiries to the folks at White Oak remain unanswered. There are plenty of published and current botanical resources in print and on-line for basic checks of botanical names. I am satisfied that the W.O. operators may be obtusely ignorant, or are simply nomenclaturally cavalier. Generosity might side with the latter!

I received the following reply to my inquiry:

"Hi Calvin, WE only can label plants with we have told. As far as we know that is correct or in refinement a "new" species. We have others looking into this now.

AS far as orders go you can place one any time. WE will NOT be going to the show this year! But we are having an open house instead."

I'm a bit baffled by the usage of capital letters but it seems they are investigating.
