Apologies for the poor picture, but it's the best I can do. I have noticed this dark area at the base of the lead growth of an L. purpurata. I am worried this may be some kind rot that will spread, but it hasn't noticeably spread over the last week and it is not soft at all. i have lost a few plants from a similar looking thing, but they all were soft over the dark area. If it is some bacterial/fungal infection, I think it would be easy enough to cut this plant back by a few years growth to an uninfected part. Am I tempting fate by watching it for a while longer before removing the new growth plus another one or two?

hard to tell from the picture, but that could be normal. If it is not soft and it does not stink, you can probably not worry about it.

I agree with Forrest (great minds think alike). If it isn't soft or mushy, I'd wait and see what happens.

Could it be purple pigmentation from the sun?
