    Dendrobium senile (UPDATE 4/2)

So I got this plant at the WOC in Miami last year. It was mounted on a green plastic screen and when we went back to the hotel room I saw that it was actually 2 plants. One I kept and the other I sent with my wife to give to her mother. The one I kept was 4 growths with one flower. It put out 4 new canes in the spring, 4 towards the end of summer and there are 4 growing now, each about to mature and already have a new growth popping out so needless to say, it grows pretty easy. From what I read, people have a hard time trying to flower them and say that they have to almost burn them while they are dormant to bloom but only give them moderate light in the summer while they are growing. I thought it over in my mind and came to the conclusion that the plants that don't bloom well probably don't get enough light, and therefore not enough food while they are actively growing so I decided to give mine fairly bright light, ie direct sun in the morning till about 1pm, and look what happened...I have 9 flowers from 8 mature growths, I'd say it worked out pretty well. Here is the first of the 9, I'll try to get another picture when they are all open, I just hope they all go at the same time!

Thanks guys!! I was surprised to see the first little green bump coming out and had my fingers crossed that they weren't keikis, but when they kept coming and coming I was jumping up and down in excitement!

I think they last a long time so you should have quite a show on your hands pretty soon!

Can you describe your watering routine, please?

    Very impressive.

MrB, I watered the plant just about every day in the summer. Then it stated losing it's leaves in the fall/winter so I stopped watering for about a month or 2 but it was still growing so I started watering again maybe once a week or so. The first signs of flowering started about 2 months ago, the flowers developed fast but they are taking their sweet ass time to open

Wait a minute. You were at WOC? How is it that all these forum people were at WOC, and I only met one mountain man, a science geek, and a surfer girl from California? Oh, and a book writer from NY, but I don't think he's around these parts...

First Clark, and now you DB? Sheez.

BTW, excellent D senile. Mine's doin' squat.

Does anyone know of a commercial source for this species?

Chris, I can probably pull a piece off this one later on this year...

Alexis, don't feel left out...I didn't see anyone from here either. Actually the only people I saw were the girls from J&L

Tom, I was talking about not seeing people at the WOC...I saw Jon's plant a few days back, but not yours. Throw a picture up on this thread to see it, I don't mind!

Well done. Keep up the good culture. Every once in a while I try one again, I've killed quite a few over the years.
