If you are a newbie, or can remember when you were. What was the reference you depended on most? I would have said book but the one I depend on most at this time is IOSPE. I only wish it also came in a printed version since searching it on a mobile device can be very time consuming proposition. I do also like Pridgeon's Illustrated Encyclopedia too. I am thinking about acquiring Classic Orchid Growers Manual, Williams and Denson. The fifth edition was published in 2005 so should not be too far behind in nomenclature. The only thing is the relatively small number of orchids covered. Only 400 species covered and the species I am doing well with and enjoying are so large and varied that they can cover conditions that are on completely opposite ends of the cultural spectrum. Dendrobium, Phalaenopsis, and Coelogyne for example. I would love a reference that divides the Species by Hot to warm, Warm to Cool, Cool to cold growers for example without having to search several sources. I do believe I am a lazy researcher! Please let us newbies know your favorites before I wast more money on purchases of little or no value. Thanks Kipper

Boy, that was a long time ago. Rebecca Northen, Home Orchid Growing, third edition.

We didn't have any of those new-fangled interweb things, with all those ethel-nets all over the place. We had libraries. And books. And talked to people who we thought knew what they were doing, even if they didn't. And then we hid all our dead plants in the back garden, out behind the shed. Now, all you kids get off the lawn.

Any thing by Charles and Margaret Baker: The Dendrobiums, Oncidium and another that covers some that start with the letter P. And Rebecca Northen as Carl mentioned. Join an orchid society. Most have libraries you can borrow from people with knowledge and experience.

    My favorite:
    Dendrobium and Its Relatives
by Bill Lavarack, Wayne Harris, Geoff Stocker
    first published in 2000
    It is organized by Section.

My question for others .... Are the Baker Culture Sheets still available?

Wow, you guys are awesome and I love Amazon! Got Two of the Baker books. Dendrobiums and Pescatorea to Pleione. Had to wait on the Oncidium one as the lowest price on Amazon was 473.01 for the hardcover. Maybe Half price books. Also ordered two of Rebecca Northen's books. There is a fourth edition out of Home Orchid Growing. got that and Miniature Orchids. You guys are great to help and it is appreciated. If I ever meet you in person, I owe you all a beer!

Orchidculture.com is still active and Troy Meyers runs it. All of Charlie's sheets are there for a minimal fee. Charlie also gave rights to his sheets to OrchidWiz so they can be found there too.

I worked at a place that bought from Timberland publishing. Bought a bunch of titles for cost back then.

Dendrobium and it's relatives! Amazon also! Thanks again... And received the first two Baker culture sheets last night. They are perfect and I will definitely recommend them to anyone who needs detailed info! Thanks for that tip Kelly!
