Hi all, I really like the species Phals and have been experimenting with them — different mounts, potting mixes... My suppliers include:

Napa Valley Orchids - Debby is only a few blocks away, so how can I resist? By the way, her new GH looks great! She has a lot of species Phals available.

Oak Hill - watch their lists. They have species seedlings and the list seems to change regularly. I always get nice plants from them. Discount for five or more of the same plant.

Al's Orchid GH - Al is also doing some nice hybridizing, and has some nice stock plants.

Big Leaf - you all know Peter Lin. Nice stuff, if a bit pricey.

Sapphire Dragon Orchids- I got some nice Phal equalacea from him. Great indigo colouring, nice plants. A bit pricey and not always much available. You have to check his site often to catch the goods. He is doing some interesting hybridizing.

Orchidview - the Norton's are also working on blue violacea strains. But you know that already.*

    Norman's Orchids, of course.

Robert Bedard - has anyone heard from him lately? His website is very out of date, and no replies, yet, from my inquiries.

Do you have some other suggestions? Where else can I find species and / or novelty hybrids?*

    Happy growing, all!
    Don

I love species Phals, too. I think you've hit most the biggies. I'd add:

Ooi Leng Orchids, if they ever come to a show near you. Michael is doing some outstanding breeding. They come to the Redland Fest every year; you could probably preorder and have it shipped from Miami.

Purificacion - same as above, you need to wait til they come to the States

Dowery Orchids - Dwayne is a great guy, but he hasn't done an import in a while. I hope he's not out of it completely, but I know he's got a very busy life.

Louisiana Orchid Connection - I've never ordered from him, only purchased at shows. He is pricey, but has some neat stuff.

Tropical Orchid Farm - I haven't checked recently, but I've gotten some nice Phals from them in the past.

RF Orchids sometimes has some nice species. I guess they have nice hybrids, too, but I only collect species so have never really paid attention.

Hi Alexis - I got some nice things from Michael Ooi at POE in SFO last February. I'll look for him next year as well. I also got a few things from Purificacion at POE, but the plants were a bit rough. She has been to POE only 2x now, as I recall. Maybe next year things will be a bit stronger. I keep looking at Dowery, but as you said, the site has not been updated. Hope they are well. I love TOF. Visited their nursery when we went to Maui - a highlight of the trip. The nursery is one of the cleanest I have ever seen - and we had a great visit with Kathy and Jeff. They always have great plants. The other two you mentioned - never ordered from RF - maybe its time! I will look forward to checking out LA OC. Thanks for the tips! Happy growing and good luck with your phals.
