    Hi all --

Looking forward to chatting with y'all about orchids! I have a lot of orchids but don't necessarily know the names of them. They are, for the most part, pretty happy and bloom consistently.

I do have this one that I bought at the garden show about 3 years ago, and I have no idea what kind of orchid it is. Any help in identifying it would be great.

    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum.

The plant in the photo may be a Stanhopea. If it is, they put bloom spikes down through the medium. Take this one out of the pot and see if you see spikes that have tried to get through the bottom of the pot. Stanhopea need to be mounted or in baskets. Use the search function here on the forum and you can learn a lot about them.

If it isn't a Stanhopea then maybe a Gongora.

    Wow, that was quick!

Guess what I'll be doing in about 5 minutes? (Besides eating cookies). Definitely will be investigating this plant's roots.

    Thanks!

I'm thinking Bifrenaria. They have pseudobulbs with a squarish cross-section, while Stanhopea and Gongora tend to have ribbed bulbs.
