from C&H and was very disappointed in the selection. Anybody else
get the catalog recently? I wonder if the economic downturn is having
    an effect on their business.

I've seen the one online and it did not look very exciting. The unique hybrids just don't seem to be out there much anymore. Just more clones!

That cross Encyclia Memoria Young C. Lott 'Newberry' looks real nice. A cross of mariae X tampensis with a nice lip. I think the selections are very good.

I was disappointed too. But I am wondering... If nurseries are having a hard time selling, should the selection go *up*? Shouldn't there more plants available and more variety since the demand is low? I'm confused as usual!

I think a trip to their greenhouses is in order so we can see exactly what they have. I wasn't very stoked by their catalog either but that doesn't mean we wouldn't unearth some real treasures if we hand picked our own. They have a great place.

I know but the Atlanta os show/sale is soon too.

Have you ever been to their place? Anyone? It's great, they have something like 15 greenhouses and you can stroll through them to your heart's content. There are a couple gh's you can't enter but that's okay. After about the 9th, I had gh overload.

I've been there on more than one occasion. If we leave the greenhouses by 1:00 pm we can make it back home around 7.

I've been there twice and I wasn't particularly impressed. The gh's were rather dirty and the plants very small. We got a special tour of the stud house(s) and that was
impressive, but the plants weren't for sale...damnit!

If a greenhouse(s) smell like a chicken coop, I leave.

No, it still light outside and I can put my buys into the greenhouse. By the way Jon, is Matlock your favorite TV show?

Gooood idea, MJ. Check 'em out and tell if the greenhouses have been cleaned up
a bit. I think you deserve a couple of nice plants for the service provided.

If I get over that way, I'll be sure to post my findings.

I received their catalog recently. They used to put out a full catalog in the Spring and an addendum in the Fall. Looks like they are now going with quarterly addendums. I did end up placing an order. One of the items that I picked up was the remake of Lc. G.S. Ball which intrigued me. I also ordered some Paphs and a couple of Epidendrum crosses.

I saw that GS Ball, too, Nik. Interesting. Keep me posted on that one, please
I really should make a road trip over there, it's only a couple of hours or so. A nice weekend getaway!

    Hello,

My recent order arrived yesterday. This is what I purchased:

Phal. Flight of Birds 'Flutterby' HCC/AOS
Phal. Hilo Lip 'Newberry' x Phal. Mary Brooks 'Mendenhall'
    Paph. sukhakulii alba
Cattleya Brabantiae 'El Toro' x 'Dixie's Spots'
    Bulbophyllum frostii
    Lc. G.S. Ball (remake)
Slc. Precious Stones 'True Beauty' x Slc. Barefoot Mailman 'Lahaina'
Epidendrum calanthum album x Epi. immatophyllum 'Stocker'
Epidendrum Crystal Valley x Epi. immatophyllum
    Rhyncostylis retusa alba

They tossed in two bonus plants:
    Phal. Carolina Bronze Meteor 'Lenette'
Epi. (tampense x floribundum) x Epi. profusa

All in all, I was very please with the health and vigor of these plants. One of the Epi. crosses is in spike and they had packaged it carefully to ensure that it wasn't damaged. The Lc G.S. Ball is a lot bigger than I expected. I purchased a 'dug up' but it's ready for a three-inch pot. C&H is one of my favorite orchid growers and I will continue to buy from them each year.

    Best Regards,
    Nik

That Flutterby is a great plant.
Nice haul, all the way around.
