    Hello,
I recently visited the Fuqua Conservatory at the Atlanta Botanical Garden and snapped quite a few photos. I'm hoping to get some help identifying the species in the photos. I've done a good bit of research and made a few guesses as to the species but any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

The photos are in a Flickr set here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/annacnorris/sets/72157639046248886/

    Thanks!

By the way, welcome! Fuqua must be a wonderful place to get lost in. I follow their blog, and what a great source of information.

Thanks! Yes, I loved it there, and their blog has been very useful in my attempts to identify the species I found there.

Hi Anna and welcome to Orchids Forum.
I can help with a few of your orchid photo ID's. If I am wrong on these there will be someone that will correct me. This will at least get you close. I recognize some of the others but am having some senior moments.

Clamshell orchid? = Pleurothallis cardiothallis (or titan)
    Green orchid = Lycaste schilleriana
Light yellow orchids = Spathoglottis sp.
Orange, pink and red orchid with long petals = Bulbophyllum echinolabium
Brownish, green and pink orchids = Oncidium species or hybrid
Small purple orchid = Scaphosepalum swertifolium (or something very similar) This species is highly variable.
Bunched fuchsia orchids with red centers = Dendrobium glomeratum or ????
White orchid with red/purple outline = Dracula cordobae or tubeana (there are a few others that look similar and I'm no expert)
Purple orchid with dark purple and yellow center = Laelia (probably one of the varieties of anceps)
White/lavender orchids = Dendrobium gonzalesii or similar

Many of the images are of hybrids, so are near-to-impossible to accurately identify. That first one Kelly ID'd is a pleurothallis, but not cardiothallis.

I got my orchid-growing start there - back when I was a student at Ga Tech and the facility was nothing more than "the public greenhouses in Piedmont Park".

Welcome to the forum Anna. That looks like an incredible place to visit! I wouldn't mind spending some time there. The only one I know for sure is the echinolabium which Kelly already suggested. Nice set of images!

First one is Blc. Goldenzelle probably 'Lemon Chiffon' AM/AOS. Is there an easier way to do this? Like looking at the picture and not having to come back to the forum to give the names?

As Ray said, a lot are hybrids, but are not uncommon ones, so someone should be able to identify them.

Lower right on p1 looks like Lc Makai (at least I think it's Lc). Am pretty confident about the Makai though.

I think you also have a Den. spectabile there too.

I think the easiest way to help with ID's would be to sign up for Flickr so you can comment directly on each photo. There are so many, otherwise I would have posted them each individually. I really appreciate your help.

Thanks for the heads up. I am trying to put together an informative gallery about orchids so I would hate to incorrectly identify a species. I thought maybe the clamshell orchid might be Pleurothallis titan because it is the species featured in post from the ABG: http://www.theorchidcolumn.com/2011/09/pleurothallis-titan-clamshell-orchid.html

Would it be accurate to describe it as a "clamshell orchid"? I don't mind using common names.

Thanks! It really is a great place. I wandered around for at least two hours.

One of the great things about digital photography, is that you can take lots of pictures. I like to take at least one picture of a label if one is present, so I don't have to try to remember any names. Then you run into the problem that some gardens don't keep labels.

That's great advice! I usually do exactly that when I visit zoos and other parks, but I don't recall seeing many labels at the conservatory. I learned my lesson though; next time I visit and snap photos, I will be sure to find a specialist and ask them on-site.

Nice pictures! I added my input in the comments of a few. I'd love to spend some time at ABG one day. Is the Conservatory the area where the dart frogs are allowed to roam freely?
