I went into the field today and saw Masdevallia patriciana. It's a really pretty miniature from Ecuador. I saw these plants growing in a fragment of cloud forest. The light inside the patch of forest was pretty bright and the masdevallias where all growing from a foot off the ground to about five feet off the ground. They were all growing on a small tree that I think is in the blueberry family (Ericaceae, maybe Macleania?)

    Those are awesome!
Is this one of your research species?
    Have you determined the pollinator?

Alfonso, these photos are incredible! I do hope you continue to post them. I'd be interested in seeing both pictures of orchids or other epiphytes/habitat photos as you have time. I hope your trip is successful and enjoyable!

I do appreciate this. Interesting how they go right along with moss obstructing them (from my own perspective) and I work so actively to keep them liberated from it.

These pictures are very informative. The photos of Masdevallia in situ are lovely. It is also good to see how Ecquagenera grows their plants. Thank you!

Wow! I love the photos, a picture really is worth a thousand words. It's one thing to read about how orchids grow in their natural environments, but it's another thing to see it.

What a fabulous experience you are taking part in. Please keep sharing your journey with us!

I just got back! And I bought a lot of really great plants!!!! I can't wait to get them next month from the Chicago show. If you have never visited Ecuagenera I would highly recommend it!! They have hotel rooms on site that you can stay in and it's only $45 a night. I've uploaded more photos here of some of the great plants I saw.

Hi Chad! Which photo do you see a species with pink flower? Is it one of these: "DSC05214" = Stelis sp, "Masdevallias" = M. phoebe?

Wow! I'm jealous, tons of great plants. Is that a pleurothallis colossus in there?

The second plant with purple flowers....I bought one from Ecuagenera labeled as aculeata, but is actually sicaria.....awesome regardless of the name.

Thanks! Yes, I think it might be P. colossus. I thought it was P. revoluta, but P. colossus might be a better match. I'll have to double check the notes and scans I made for the plant.

They are quite similar I'm bloom habit, but much more different in size. Pl. colossus is about 1 meter tall with leaves the size if dinner plates. When I return from my travels I'll do a side by side comparison.

Oh! Thanks. This one was about a foot tall and the leaves were smaller than a dinner plate.

Its most likely revoluta, BUT its an extremely diverse section of pleurothallis with lots of variation and gradation between species. I'll gave a go at it in Luers key when I return later this week.
