From near Mindo, Ecuador. I have been unable to ID this orchid. It was on a tree that had fallen by the road.

I never collect plants from the wild. But that doesn't mean that I was solely tempted in this case. I could have made a extraodinary collection just from the orchids that were on the branches that were piled on the side of the road or growing by the roadside. I lost count of the genera present, Campylocentrum, Epidendrum, Dracula, Lockhartia, Oncidium, Pleurothallis, Porroglossum, Sobralia, the number of plants and genera was staggering.

Ricardo - If the orchids were going to be killed if you didn't do anything wouldn't that be "saving them" and not necessarily "collecting" them for selfish purposes? Are you saying that taking them under any circumstance is illegal?

I have no clue as for if it is legal or not to collect orchids from the wild in Ecuador. I saw many local plants in people houses so I would infer that either it is not or if there any any laws, they are not aimed at the locals. Personally, I never collect plants from the wild. This is my personal preference, it is not a moral or legal judgement on the issue.
