I have talked about this in the past but I'll bring it up again.

A number of our members don't have a real name shown in the signature block or on the profile page. I feel funny calling someone "SpiderGhost32" (I made that up) instead of "Joe" when responding to a post. Also, many don't show a location. A location, even a region or even a continent would be nice to know. Maybe this doesn't bother anyone but me but right now on the first page of "Recent Posts" there are 7 posters that I have no clue what their name is other than the user name. Most of those don't have a location shown either. If that is what you want then ignore my rant with my apologies.

These can be added by editing your profile. This will not change your user name.

Of course, if you prefer complete anonymity we still want you here contributing.

Not know what country or what region someone is from or what their given name is makes it much less personal for me and harder to remember who is who. I also find the lack of information about location unhelpful for answering some questions. People will sometimes ask a cultural question where the answer depends to some extent on where you are located. Since I am not going to answer all of the possible variations that depend on the location, I would have to ask where someone is located and them come back later and follow up. It might be easier for me to just not answer at all and hope someone else has the energy.

I must be one of them.

    Kelly,
I think people are afraid of identity theft. At least I'm one of them and I do not know how much it prevents it by not showing. It was a dilemma when I first time signed up with this forum.
It will be nice to meet you one day!

    Marni,
That is a good point. If someone needs help for cultural question, we should definitely mention where we live.

Sorry but, I like visiting here very much! And I met many people through this forum which is great.

Kelly, I've tried editing my profile but I've lost my password (I'm posting now through the tapatalk app). When I try to reset my password, they say to expect an email with instructions, but I never get it. As a mod, is that something you can help with?

Btw, my profile says I'm a 45 year old man. I'm not! I'm 25 year old girl! Aaaah!

Kelly, I don't have anyway to help with your password. However, I will pass this message on to the owner, Brent, and ask him to help you.

Have you checked your spam folder for the email?

Hopefully you will hear from Brent soon.

I've realized I was somewhat confused between the profile options in Tapatalk and the profile options in the web interface. Since the forum iPhone app went out of date (this happened like a year ago maybe? can't remember exactly what the deal was....) I switched over to Tapatalk. My interaction with the forum is almost entirely via that app rather than the web interface and the app has different options.

For the sake of clarity and just so I know what happens, I'm going to post this now from the web interface and will post again momentarily from Tapatalk to see what, if any, difference there is between these settings.

I also didn't realize that the practice was to put your name into your signature. My name is Chris and it should be in my signature now :)

    Posting now from Tapatalk.

Interesting to note that I can not see the signatures of people's posts so their names don't show up here in the mobile app.

My conclusion: the settings you specify in Tapatalk don't appear to be directly connected to the settings here in Orchids Forum. You have to modify your settings in the web interface. Once you do this, though, your posts from Tapatalk will show up in the web interface with the settings that you specified there.

Chris, thanks for the information and all of your effort. I didn't know that the settings were separate. Thanks for adding your name and nice to meet you :)
