Naming Rules Help Please

    In general, if an orchid hybrid is bred back to one of its parent species, is it still the same hybrid, with perhaps a cultivar or grex name applied (if awarded)?

    Thanks for helping to improve my knowledge of naming conventions.

    No, it will get a new name.

    A x B = C, so if C is crossed with A, it would be D, and if C was crossed with B instead, that would be E. Read this.

    I'll admit that may not seem particularly sensible, as the genetics of those three scenarios all contain genes from the same parents, but that's the convention. If you were to back cross C with A, then D with A, then that result with A again, and repeat that 100 times, you'd have 100 new hybrids....

    Cultivar epithets have absolutely nothing to do with the breeding, but are arbitrarily assigned as ways to distinguish between different individuals of the same species or hybrid, whether awarded or not.
