Nepenthes maxima var. miranda

I did not know they did that, either. Pretty cool.

 

I have seen them bloom at OL. I always kill em before they do this.
I just got a couple small ones. I keep trying.

 

I had one bloom in a tank once. Pretty cool stuff.

As a side note, one time back in the day, I suddenly experienced an absolute surfeit of flies in the house. They were everywhere and I'd killed many when I finally went to bed. I'm sure there must have been well over 20 flying around here and there. When I got up the next day, not a fly was to be found anywhere! It was shocking. I couldn't figure out what happened until I happened to glance at the Nepenthes pitcher which appeared oddly...bloated. That's when I discovered that the plant had eaten ALL the flies during the night! That one pitcher had become gorged with every damn fly and was easily 3/4 full with them. Amazing plants, those. However not as amazing as Angs, fyi.

 

Before we get too deep into the sports trash talkin'..... Did you smell the flowers, Clark? Mine smell like popcorn.

 

I have heard that feeding them does this. If you don't fertilize them they will create more pitchers instead. Don't know if that is true or not.

Ok...so I agree that Angs suck less than the OU football team. The mighty Sooners are one of the best teams in the nation, every single year. We very well may win it all this coming year which would be our EIGHTH national championship I believe. Only in your twisted dreams is your team as good.

By your brilliant statement, Angs are even better than the sooners! Wow...that is a very high standard for Angs to meet, but I agree with you. Man, I sure never thought I would ever agree with Clark about something.

O.K. so I didn't even know they did this. None of mine ever bloomed, but I didn't fertilize them. Cool.

If you weren't already aware, your plant is male.

 

The male and female flowers look similar. However, whereas the male flowers have a uniformly thin stalk from the petals to the anthers, in the female flowers this stalk, which is where the ovary is situated, is more swollen particularly at the base. Nepenthes are dioecious (ie male and female flowers are not produced on the same plant) so you're plant is male and you'll need to find a female plant in flower if you want seed. The problem with Nepenthes is that the flower stems are produced so irregularly that pollenating is more opportunistic than planned. Most hybrids that have been produced result from the good furtune of having two plants in flower rather than the breeder carefully considering which two plants to use as parents.
