Hello, everyone. My name is Irina and I am new to growing orchids in NYC. I have had a few phaelonopsis orchids over the last few years which are still alive and I decided to give it a try with some other types. So, I purchased a dendrobium, vanda, and cymbidium orchids from Home Depot and eBay. Now, I have a collection of about 11 orchids in various stages of growth. Hope I can keep them alive and see them bloom.
My husband bought me a miltonia and miltoniopsis orchids too but they had root rot. I removed all the dead roots and am in process of rehabilitating them. Hope they grow new roots to share with you guys. Two of them already show some little growth, yay!
Also, my husband bought me two vandas in glass vase. One has good root system but the other one has short little roots and I might need some advice on what to do with it
So, wish me luck on my orchid adventure and I can't wait to meet all of you to share our experiences :)

I grow lots of vandas here in Florida. They need lots of humidity around the roots, but also need to not be soggy ever.I doubt that they would do well in a glass vase constantly wet.Just my opinion. You might try them in a basket with big bark chips around the roots to hold some moisture.Otherwise,I would mist them once or twice a day and let them dry and see what the roots do.If they have green tips and grow, the plant is probably happy.Down here most grow them in baskets with roots hanging out.I water every day and then let them dry in the sun with 20% shade.

    Thanks, Steve.
The vanda my husband bought for me stays in a vase but has to be watered twice a week and then water is drained. This is what the good one looks like

If the roots have green tips, they are probably happy. If no green tips, then things are not as good as you think. Not sure if you can get enough light long term in that window. Wait and see.The plant looks ok from here but I cannot see the roots like I would like.

Here is a better view of the roots. Some of them have some green on them but most don't. Should I mist it daily? Put a humidifier next to it ? The room has plenty of light so I am not too worried about that.

Only a few of the roots are good.most are not good.try a humidifier and misting with air movement too.the amount of light that you need for happy vandas will be hard for you to get in a house.they are not the best choice for indoors. But,good luck as you try with them.I hope you will be able to show that I am wrong and you do well with this.It is a pretty blue one.Vandas have such deep bright colors.they are addictive.

Thanks so much Steve! This one supposedly is specially bred for indoor growth. I don't know but hope it makes it. They are really beautiful plants like you said!
