For the plant thieves in thailand really i don't like this term much there are only a few for paph and you know them all i am sure they are very well to do up front and make others out to be bad. Thailand has a number of good people it is just the bad ones are the ones with bug business and they put up a convincing front.

I guess time will tell Andy what happens. But I recall what happened with Paph canhii, and certainly nothing the Vietnamese government has done, has protected the species. Its nearly extinct in the wild. Corrupt officials involved in the trade of this species, porous borders that people traverse illegally with ease, I could add more to this list. I recall seeing being sold by the kilogram in Bangkok.

I view it as very important to get flasks of this plant going, viable legal plants available. If a plant is restricted, it only makes it more desirable increasing the pressures on the plants from collection. Well just my opinions formed while studying people trafficking through Thailand while at university (trust me there are similarities), conversations with CITES officers, and a student doing his Phd on plant trafficking in Thailand.

Of course it is right what you say but it will be restricted as there needs to be a CITES from the country of origin before even flasks can be sold and there isn't one at the moment and i think it will be a long time coming as the Laos gov are rather offended to they won't do it at the moment. it is a bit late to worry about them being gone from the wild from what i understand they all ready are. Again though we will see.

WEll time will tell, but look at Paph hangianum and flasks are shipped globally all the time, and I dont think Vietnam has ever given permission for that species to be exported with a CITES.. And CITES in Australia has allowed plants to be imported from Taiwan many times.

It was my understanding anitum was being sold as such and CITES was accepting it in various countries. Anyway, its my last comment here.. Its sort of hijacking the original post LOL.

Eric- I know of a number of Thai growers who purchased these at the Thailand Paph Mtg. I believe a few have already set pods and will be looking to export in 2 years or so depending on the results.

Chad I have the same information. I have seen photos of the pods and have booked the first six flasks from one. Fingers crossed now for good germination.
