Hi. I was given this orchid in april when it was in full bloom and it has been in my office on the window sill. On Fridays when leaving office for the weekend i shift it into a shady corner. It is quite happy and since the flowers fell it has grown two new leaves. Now do i need to repot it in view of the aerial roots? My very first phal died suddenly so i really want to keep this alive and in good shape.

When was the last time you repotted? If the media is starting to break down, it is probably good to repot. I don't know where you are located (it is good to have location info in your profile), but if you can keep them warm and growing in the winter, you can repot now. It does look like growing well. It looks a bit dehydrated end, but it is probably difficult to get humidity high in the office environment.

Aerial roots aren't so much of issues. Phals in bark usually produce them. Some researchers say that large scale phal producers reduce the aerial roots by using more water retentive media (like sphag).

Why are you putting it in a dark corner during the weekend? When it comes to growing inside and light, most people underestimate how much they can take. It's leaves are pretty dark green which generally means it isnt getting enough light. If it does fine in the window sill during the week, I am sure it will still be fine when you aren't there on the weekend.

It would be a lighter green if it were getting enough light ( think the color of grass). At lower light levels, you will still get growth but new growths will be overly spindly and lanky and blooming will be inhibited,

Thank you. I have anothet leaf appearing now. I will keep in the light at all times and perhaps increase watering a little bit more as the temperature is quite high lately 30celcius by 9am.

5 months later still no bloom. I brought it home from office this weekend as the office is being fumigated. Shall i just leave on my porch? Its warm in Ghana even at night and my porch gets sunset not morning sun. What causes so many aerial roots.

Dubes, I don't have an opinion about putting it on your porch. However, if you do be sure and protect it from slugs and snails. They love Phals.

I've read several papers of Phal production in horticultural science. The factories want to reduce aerial roots for the presentation, and 2 things were mentioned. More moisture retaining media (sphagnum moss, or addition of peat moss to bark-type chunky media) causes the faster growth with less aerial roots. Also, translucent pots contribute to keep the roots in the pots. But as a hobbyist, I wouldn't worry about the aerial roots.

I have been away for 3 weeks and return to finally find my orchid with 2 spikes. Before travelling I moved it to a brighter area on my porch. So so excited. It has 10 huge leaves.

Hello,I have a quite similar problem related to the orchid i recently bought. Arriving home i noticed 2 small le avea under the bulb and lots of broken roots. I took it out of the pot to check the inside and the central roots were white pale almost rotten. Took the off cleaning the spot with some alcohol and now i would like to know if it looks fine and how to treat it further. Thank you very much in advance! View attachment 30478
