I am always trying new mounting techniques. I did this yesterday with some scrap material I had in the garage. It is garden edging made from recycled plastic. I just cut it to length and roughed the surface with sandpaper. I put a few notches in the sides to give the monofilament some grip. It doesn't look like wood but the color blends in well.

BTW, this is a Bulbophyllum dearei that was just removed from a compot.

Kelly, for what it's worth, several years ago, I build a vanda basket out of the "plastic lumber" made from recycled PET soda and water bottles. The plant took to it really well, attaching its roots just as it would with wood (but I'd guess, not as tenaciously).

    I'll bet that works fine.

Thanks, Ray. I don't see any reason that this wouldn't work. I think I'll try it with some miniatures. One thing is certain ... the mount will outlast the plant :).

Interesting, it looks semi-natural. I'm also looking forward to seeing how it goes in a year or so.

Thanks, Marni. This plant is from an out-cross that I made and Troy Meyer did the flasking. This flask (my free one) did pretty good.

I'm thinking of wrapping some nz sphagnum moss around a 2" X 2" piece of styrofoam and make a moisture retentive planter pole. At least it sounds like it should work. :)
