:) So who is going to POE this year? The vendor list looks great! This will be my 13th year and I wouldn't miss it!!! I love the Gala preview night, lots of food, wine, music, a great silent auction, and of course first shot at so many wonderful ORCHIDS!!! There is a nice little motel on Lombard St. just 4 blocks from POE, nothing fancy, but if you tell them you are there for the show they give you a discount $$$, last year it was only $59. a night!!! sign me up! :D

We'll be there - wouldn't miss it. I was really disappointed that they dropped the Thursday night preview party last year. I talked with a number of vendors who felt the Thursday night gig was important to the overall "feel" of the show. The complaints must have been numerous because Thursday night's back this year - I just ordered tickets this morning.

We usually stay at the Hilton but this year we rented a condo on Van Ness for a change of pace. I like the sound of a motel 4 blocks away from the show ... we usually have to park that far away anyhow!

The vendor list is a little different this year. I'm looking forward to meeting the Botanica Ltd. folks in person, but there are notable vendors absent from the list: White Oak, Napa Valley, etc. I wonder if the list on the website is comprehensive & set, or perhaps more of a work in progress. Any idea?

Here's a reminder of the scope of this show for those who may have forgotten:

I plan to be there. It might be a long day-trip so I may not need a place to stay.

I'll see you there on Fri.! Do we know if Dale's card has a new expiration date or any other pertinent info. that may put a hold on our spending spree?

It does. New expiration date and that sneaky little number on the back is new, too.

If you find Lepanthes calimae, get it for me, please. Thank you.

    POE

My wife (Sue) and I will be attending the Gala.

As for White Oak, they are having their own POE, the Pacifica Orchid Exhibition (LOL), an open-house at the nursery the weekend of the POE.

    Here's the info at SFGate:

I was talking to Scott this weekend and he said the man hours necessary to stage a display and sales booth and then take it all down, pretty much negated any profit they made, so they decided to try something else. It's an interesting drive down the coast to Pacifica and there will be alot of plants in bloom for the open house.

Now that's classic. POE? This isn't the first time they have tried to capitalize on the success of other's names. Apparently, a few years ago they registered one or more urls one or two letters different from the the url for Andy's Orchids, so if anyone mis-typed trying to get to Andy's they got White Oak Orchids instead.

And if it isn't enough that they try to profit from others, they also try to damage people. In California, plant vendors are required to have a nurserymen's license to operate. I had had a booth next to White Oak for about 5 years at POE and was required to have a nurserymen's license to participate, as were they. When I put my plants up on my website for the first time, the Ag Department got an "anonymous" fax alerting them to the fact that I was selling orchids. A very confused agent gave me a call to verify that my license was current and she forwarded the fax to me. They had faxed it from their own fax machine that headed the fax "White Oak Orchids". Since I had a license, it was not a problem for me. It did, however, answer the question of who had alerted the Ag Dept to a friend's plant sales. Of course, he also had a license. I still can't figure out what they thought they would gain, but it is totally in character for them.
