Hello, I just wanted to ask for some advice on how to re-pot my orchids. I got some new dendrobiums from the store and they were on ceramic pots in coconut husk media but the media is starting to rot and I want to re-pot them but the thing is there are a lot of roots that winded their way inside the coconut husk and I'm afraid I might destroy the roots if I break the husks open. The husks are about a quarter of a coconut in size and a lot of roots are just stuck in them. How do I get the roots out without breaking them? At least most of the roots preferably. Some will surely break in the process.

 Wow, I've never seen that size used. You may have to just cut the roots free if they won't pull out of the rotted medium. The size I have seen used the chips are about 1-1.5 cm cubes. With those if you can't get one off I would suggest just leaving it on the root.

They have rooted in the medium just like mounted specimens except the roots went through the husks. I was wondering why they were in pots because from the looks of it I think the husks were supposed to be hanged. I guess I have no choice but to cut the roots that wont come off. Thank you

I would just crumble the rotted parts off, and leave the intact parts alone, along with any roots attached to them.
