Does anyone here grow this one? I have a very large plant of this species that continues to produce spikes (last count was 7), both upright and through the net pot in which the plant is growing. My problem is that the spikes never form buds and bloom. Some of the spikes are 4+ months old. Does this species just take an excruciatingly long time to bloom or is this a sign of me not doing something right?

I do grow it and can't say I've not noticed it taking a long time, but that is something I wouldn't probably notice. How long are the spikes? You don't see any differentiation? It may not be you. Do you know that this clone has given buds for someone else?

The longest spikes are ~6" long. The plant bloomed for the person I bought it from, and there are still some old spikes on the plant. The older spikes are only a bit longer than 3". The old ones look like the flower buds came from a dense cluster on the end of the spike, and these new ones look much more elongated and spread out.

Are you saying there are buds on the new spikes? These should bloom successively. If your spikes are much longer than the previous ones, it may be the light is not as bright.

I don't see signs of buds, but the "sheaths" (not sure of the correct term) on the spike are there and much more spread out than on the old spikes

I think I know what you're talking about as I've had this happen to me with others in this genius. It was recommended to me that I increase humidity and that helped some. I grow indoors so inevitably humidity does drop. If your humidity is high I would too recommend increasing light as it would be the next best thing.

Ok thanks Marni and Kermie! My humidity is pretty high most of the time, but I have a feeling light is the issue. This is one growing in the fridge, and it's on the very low light side. I'll move it to the other side and see what happens. Kermie, did yours still bloom even though it was stretched out?

I think it should, but in my experiences some are just longer then others -i guess it depends on the condition during growth at that time.
I will be interested to know how you do as mine still protests blooming and is not consistent.

I thought I'd bump this thread back up because the same Scaph. that I posted about above is still holding the same spikes it had when I posted previously. It never has flowered, though. I also have a Scaph. merinoi that I bought from Ecuagenera that is also taking ages to form buds. The plant currently has spikes that formed sometime around Christmas but no buds. I grow this plant about 8" under T5HO and have no problems blooming Bulbophyllums, Gastrochilus, and other Pleurothallids. Any thoughts?
