ImageUploadedByOrchidsForum.com1401588356.179038.jpg I bought this Schoenorchis marked as S. vanoverberghii, but on researching this species quickly realized it is most certainly not that. My guess is that it's S. fragrans... but there are several species of Schoenorchis that are strikingly similar and I'm really not sure how to tell which it is. Other species I consider as possible candidates are S. seidenfadenii and S. pachyacris.

To make matters worse, my research has cast a shadow on another Schoenorchis I have which is marked as S. fragrans shown here ImageUploadedByOrchidsForum.com1401588414.261583.jpg . This is from Andy's and thus probably trustworthy, but to my chagrin my clone looks more like photos of S. seidenfadenii on orchidspecies.com.

Any advice on how I might verify the species of these plants? The first should bloom within a few weeks and that will help... But images of these species are so similar on the web that I'm really at a loss as to how to sort this out.

    S. seidenfadenii has and upturned J shape lip while fragrans does not. Here is a really good view of Schoenorchis seidenfadenii close up. I have gotten seidenfadenii labeled fragrans from a Thai vendor a couple of years. It is very possible that Andy picked some up from the same source at a show here in the US. Both are very nice species.

Thanks, Marni! This is really helpful. Based on this, I think my S. fragrans is definitely S. seidenfadenii.

The other mysterious plant will have to wait a few weeks for bloom. I will update and post pics once it gets there.

It is S. seidenfadenii and I got one(labeled as S. fragrans) from Andy also in 2012.

I have been looking for fragrans. Now I am worried how to actually find one.

You have nothing to worry about that. Chances are you will find S. fragrans before seidenfadenii. S. seidenfadenii is a bit harder to find and nicer IMO.

I asked at our local greenhouse but they only had the one on their stud bench. Worried to order one and get the wrong one though they do not appear to be that different.

I have 2 different species but I don't want to put names on them quite yet. They were labeled as one of each. The smaller one is in spike. When it blooms I can be more certain. I am willing to part with a growth off one if you are interested in a trade sometime.

S seidenfadenii has been almost never seen in the US. Andy most likely got his supply from the same Thai vendor that I got mine. I suspect that if you order from another source you will get fragrans. Or look for something labeled S manipurensis as that is the Indian form of fragrans but not a distinct species. And certainly you could trade an extra seidenfadenii for something very good.

Thanks for the clarification Marni. I know the history of taxonomy within the Genus is also flawed and further complicated in even determining what someone is referring to. William Pinnex could elaborate in more detail. I have the plant from Andy that you are referring to. I also have another somewhere labeled as manupurensis. The 'manupurensis' is tiny by comparison.

Thanks. Be sure to spread the word.;)
I have some other extras as well.
What kind of stuff are you interested in?

Do you ever make it up to Hausermann's? Natt's orchids? I miss Chicago just about everyday. Except for last winter.

If it isn't something that is grown in the leaf litter of common species I don't bother to mention it.;)

I grow weeds and it can't be more common than that, but not to worry...

I will post it shortly. Let me know if you think it is correctly identified and we work it in for fall. ;)
