Stanhopea sp. Columbia NCO#1338 x self (probably Stanhopea ospinae)

    Hello,

I purchased this unidentified Stanhopea species from Tropical Orchid Farm in Maui a few years back. It is Stanhopea sp. Columbia NCO#1338 x self. This is the first time that it has bloomed for me. And it was worth the wait! There are nine flowers on the spike. The largest flower is about 4-1/2 inches in diameter. It has a very sweet, fruity aroma. I can't quite think of what it smells like. Maybe something between Juicy Fruit Gum and fabric softener.

Here is the spike emerging from the bottom of the basket:

I'm gonna email Kathy at TOF and ask whether they have had this species identified. I'll keep you posted.

    Best Regards,
    Nik

    Hi Everyone!

I received a reply from Kathy at TOF. She said that they hadn't had it identified, but Jeff thinks it is Stanhopea ospinae. Here is a link to that species on Jay Pfahl's Internet Encyclopedia of Orchids:

    http://www.orchidspecies.com/stanospinae.htm

Looks like a pretty good match to me. And the information seems to match for the description of the species. Makes me happy!

    Best Regards,
    Nik

    Hi!

It's been another day and the flowers are now fully open. I took a few more photos this morning.

The fragrance has permeated throughout the greenhouse, laundry, and kitchen. It's lovely!

So would it be a good idea to try to self this plant? It is already a selfing. I don't have any other Stanhopeas in bloom nor do I have any stored pollen. And if so, I don't think I know the right way to pollinate it. Any suggestions?

    Best Regards,
    Nik

Good growing! One can never have too many pictures of a Stanhopea, they look so different from every angle.

A selfing of a selfing is usually not a good idea, kind of worse than first cousins. A sibling cross (two of the seedlings from a pod) or a back cross (a seedling crossed back to the original plant) will result in better genetic variation and stronger progeny. Rudolf Jenny is the expert on Stanhopea and is very willing to ID plants. If you can take the lip off of the plant and photograph it separately that would help. If you need his email, contact me in a pm.

    Hi!

I did as Marni suggested and sent an email with additional close-up photos to Dr. Rudolf Jenny. This is his reply:

He is the leading authority on the Stanhopea genus, so I'll go with it. :) Also, thank you, Marni, for suggesting it. It never would have occurred to me to contact him if you hadn't suggested it.
