The amazing Bulb. kubahense

Zack, I doubt you'll have much trouble growing this one here without a terrarium. I think it gets pretty big, so it would almost need its own tank by the time it's bloom size.

I think Zack should be first in line since he's waiting so patiently...just make sure you order one for me too

By the time it's flowering size, I might not be here in New Orleans anymore. Besides, I don't see anything wrong with having a tank dedicated to this plant

I first saw an image of B.kubahense in 2008 when a contact I have in Peninsula Malaysia sent it to me. He bought it from a roadside vendor in Sarawak Borneo. My reply to him was as follows:

"Your lovely plant intrigues me. The leaves look like refractilingue soft leaves, which are a lovely coppery colour when forming. The creeping climbing habit is also normal with this species.The flower colour with red-purple spots is somewhat similar to that species, but the flowers themselves are presented differently. B.refractilingue normally has a sub-umbellate inflorescence 11-16cm long with 5-8 flowers which are appox 2cm long and have a mossy scent but don't normally open as wide as the flowers shown. Also the flowers in your image are very close together. The main difference between B.refractilingue and your plant is the shape of the inflorescence and the compact cluster of open flowers.
Is it possible to give me the size of the flowers also the length of the largest leaf? B.refractilingue is endemic to Borneo, is your plant a hybrid or a new species? I wonder."

B.kubahense is likely not in my future as an indoor grower, temperate climate, no greenhouse. It sounds like the growth habit is not compatible with those conditions. However, I do hope this species can and will become more available for growers with the right conditions. Beautiful plant!!

 

There is something in me that says Hybrid when I look at the flowers of this supposed natural species.

 

Hybrid or not, if it ever becomes reasonably priced and available, it will be mine.

 

Bulbophyllums kubahense and refractilingue are both good species. My previous post on kubahense together with the reply to my contact are from 2008 long before the formal description was published.

 

I'm perfectly aware that both these species name are valid. I just expressed my initial and later thought when this showed up on Flickr in 2008.
