Saw these small elongate critters moving around on my purp carnea flowers and didn't care till I realized they're doing a lot of damage. Are these thrips and if so, how should I kill them? TIA.

    Yup, use Merit or Orthene.

Thrips seem to be the insect of the year. We have them down south too. They are easy to kill, but they keep coming back so you have to spray often.
They really can disfigure the flowers, not to mention spreading viruses and stuff.

I had a bunch of them several weeks ago, I did not know what they were. I sprayed something, but they still did not die. Then I had to spray again, and I haven't seen them since. I don't know where they went, I must've killed them.

I use the Rose & Flower Insect Spray by Bayer (active ingredients imidacloprid and cyfluthrin) for aphids, thrips, mealies, scale and other nasties on my orchids. I have never had any phytotoxicity issues, even when sprayed directly onto flower buds.
