I have a Trias nasuta that has set a pod, and I was considering sending the seed to Troy. But I don't know for SURE that this is a positive ID, because I've never seen the darn thing in bloom. The flowers all got pollinated before I could lay eyes on them. Also, I don't know if they were pollinated by an insect, or if this plant is self pollinating. I was watching it pretty closely as the buds were forming, and I strongly suspect it is cleistogamous/self pollinating.

Never having sent seed to Troy before, I have a few questions for the pros before I contact him:
    1. Is this a species worth sending?
    2. Will he be interested in it even though I don't know the positive ID? (I think I understand from his FAQs that I will have to pay more for it upfront...that's ok.)
    3. If this plant is cleistogamous, does that necessarily mean its offspring will be, too? No need to grow a bunch of duds...

I think the pod is a few months old; it's fat, but it hasn't started to split yet.

    I appreciate any input!

My stupid nasuta does the same damned thing. It had about 15 pods on it in '08. Is yours a WOC plant?

    Yup - Ooi Leng.

Dale, does knowing Jon's is a dud too (I'm pretty sure his is from the same source) change your answer to question #3?

The flowers on mine last about 38 seconds before they self. I've never gotten viable seed from any of the pods.

No. Just because your plant and Jon's plant seem to have cleistogamous flowers doesn't necessarily mean all the progeny will be the same way. I have many volunteer seedlings/plants of Epidendrum nocturnum in my GH. As you probably know, E. nocturnum is well known for having cleistogamous flowers. There are a few of the volunteer plants in my GH that hold their flowers well. This might not be a real good example, but it indicates that cleistogamy doesn't always happen in species prone to it. Trias are worth growing for the plant alone, anyway.

    Ok, thanks.

Jon, how did you learn the seed wasn't viable?

Mainly there wasn't much seed in the capsules, but I also looked at some under high magnification; there were no embryos.

Thanks, Jon. This is all new to me. I guess I'll wait until the pod splits and see what's what.

Say the seed is good (and my inexperienced eye doesn't know how to determine that) - how long does the seed stay viable? How quickly do I need to swaddle it and get it to Troy?

Troy sent me detailed instructions for collecting the seed and sending them. Just contact him and he will help you with the details.
