Hello any and all pest experts, I've been spying some sort of bug hiding in the roots/tree fern mounts of a lot of my plants. Looks like a very tiny beetle, and the back is a shiny coppery color. More active at night, shies away from bright light. Very fast mover. Doesn't look like any kind of thrip I've seen pics of. Any ideas? Should I be worried?

Have you noiced any damage to the plants? What about accelerated media decomposition?

The tree fern mounts do seem to be breaking down a bit quicker than usual, but that could be my imagination. Mostly these things move in and out of the tree fern and the sphag I'm using for mounting. Worried more about possible damage to roots.

Hmmmm.....shiny back, fast, nocturnal, looks like a small beetle? My guess would be a young or small beetle.

Brown? Maybe cockroaches. Do you live in squalour?

    Ideas? Kill them.
Should you be worried? Probably. Perhaps not from these bugs but certainly from the breakdown and infestation of our society by countless destructive and invasive forces. I feel your insect problem is a microcosm and a symbol of the larger problems we all face in the 21st century.

Drench those bitches with insecticidal soap or break out the big guns and use orthene or similar.

Is there a bumper sticker? I need one, if there is.

can you submerge any of the mounts in a bucket of water so the sucker will leave its hiding place? if so, can you post a photo?

You know... Floozo has a point. If these bugs are living in your plants, what else might be in there? I say nuke your collection if you can.

You'd need at least four bumpers for that.

Dear Anglican dude; There are about 4,500 species of cockroach, of which 30 species are associated with human habitations .

that leaves 4,470 species of roach that resent your squalor comment .

what you said after that is quite funny :)

    Boytjie, try what Bri said
