Can anyone help me determine what would be appropriate conditions for a bulbo species? The tag says bulbophyllum species 'baiyer river, PNG'. I've had it for 4 years, and it doesn't seem to grow very well no matter where I put it. Right now I have it in dappled mid-day sun, night temps down to 57, day temps up to 85, and daily water. It gets decent airflow, but it isn't breezy. It's growing, but the speed is painfully slow. Like a bulb or two per year.

    TIA.

If you google baiyer river you'll find lots of info and buried in that is probably the elevation.

Baiyer River itself is surrounded by huge mountains on all sides and runs from from center of Western Highlands in Papua northward, staying with the mountains the whole time, until it runs into the Ramu River in the Northern lowlands (Sepik). I will look for local rain gauge and Met station data.

Jon, I know it says relief data incomplete, but this topo map section might help. There is an indication that that river lies in more scrub like or grassland areas with little forest cover.

Here is mean annual temp data for Wabag, 30 miles West of the Baiyer River, at ~2000 m

Seems like I might be growing it a bit too warm. Maybe brighter and cooler. Thanks Chris.

EDIT - nevermind on the temp part. Seems like I might be doing perfectly. I'll just try to give it more light. I think I have the watering part right as the Baiyer River Sanctuary receives ~260cm of rainfall per year.

Jon, I presume you've checked Google Earth for elevation. Unfortunately, I don't see elevation for that area. Looking in my atlas it appears the area is c. 2000 M ASL with elevations 4000 M ASL, and more, within a few kilometers. I'd expect that cooler air would pool in the river valley. I estimate RH to be 400%.

I found references for elevations on the river from 800 to 1650 m.

Chris, do you still have the photo of them trolling for sharks and using you for bait? I loved that photo.
