I posted this last August so sorry for another post so quickly. It bloomed in August, now March, and Marni has an old post with a plant blooming in December so I don't know if it has a definite flowering season. These flowers are definitely in my top ten favorites but the plants are nothing very special.

The spikes emerge from a young growth before the pseudobulb becomes obvious and when the leaves are about 1/2 the length of the mature leaves. My plant is growing in bright light (Cattleya light), intermediate-warm temperatures and in a basket loosely filled with coconut fiber. Watered year-round.

Today was a gray day and the first photo is taken with natural light. The second photo is with a flash. Photo #3 is detail of why it has the species epithet of maxillare (maxilla is the upper jaw bone and Latin for jaw).

Awesome pics, Kelly! And an equally awesome genus! Mine reliably flowers twice a year, and I love it.

Thanks, Ryan. I have only had mine for a year and August was my first blooming. I hope mine does twice per year also.

    Thanks, Marni.

    Thanks for the compliment.
Unfortunately, there is no fragrance that I can detect.

Kelly, it is spectacular, the purple is such a deep color. Is it a big plant, I want one, when it is in bloom do bring it down where it can be seen and if so does that limit how long it blooms?

Here is the plant photo from August. It is in a 6" basket.
If my memory serves me correctly each flower lasts around 2 weeks and the spike emergence has been staggered so the plant was in bloom for a few months.

WOW! What is it about 2 1/2' to 3' from side to side. Maybe I could fine a place for it if it likes to be up near the roof, can it take that high light. Is all that growth in one year?
